At St Joseph’s, we recognise that many children require special educational provision at some time in their school lives, and our commitment in this area is evidenced by the fact that we employ a teacher on a full time basis in the role of Special Education Needs Coordinator (SENCO).

Special educational needs may be academic, emotional, physical or behavioural and whether they be short or long term can usually be met in the classroom with the cooperation of the child, parent and teacher.

A child who continues to experience difficulties with work will be started on the Staged Approach to Assessment, in line with the Code of Practice for Special Educational Needs.

For some children it may be necessary to involve outside agencies to assess and give further guidance. Parents will be involved at each stage in this process.

Able children are provided for through differentiation and extension work within class.
