Cultural Week - Diwali

Today our school began celebrating our first full cultural week – and what better a day to start than Diwali! To help us to understand more about the experiences and cultures of members of our community, three brave Year 6’s volunteered to share their traditions – and that of their families – in assembly. They spoke beautifully about how Diwali is something that they live out either as a Hindu, or members of a mixed faith family. When asked if they’d be happy to lead an assembly about Diwali, one of the children said: ‘I’d be proud to represent my faith’. Comments like this really highlight how important it is to foster a culture of sharing within our community.

Following the assembly, our pupils were able to ask our pupil experts some of their impressively inciteful ‘wonder questions’, such as:

  • When did you first learn about Diwali?
  • How did the story of Rama and Sita link to how you celebrate Diwali?
  • What is your favourite part of celebrating Diwali?
  • Why is it that only Hindus, Jains and Sikhs celebrate Diwali?
