Faith Leader Reflections - Catholic Social Teaching

This half term we have been exploring the Catholic Social Teaching Values of Distributive Justice and Options for the Poor. The definition of Distributive Justice is all about sharing fairly. The meaning for Options for the Poor is putting people in need first.

A great example of Options of the Poor is the parable of the Good Samaritan where the Samaritan helps the poor injured man. These are closely linked principles that equally show us how to share the resources which God has given us. CST emphasizes that God wants everyone to be treated fairly and that everyone has what they need to have good lives. Sometimes people forget that they have more than they need.

John 3:17-18

‘‘If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and truth’’.

It is our duty to help our neighbours in the world, those who are vulnerable and suffering. Together we can make the world a better place. We can live this out by donating to charity, volunteering and making other people's voices heard.

In conclusion for the first half term, we are left with a question: How can you show distributive justice and options for the poor?
