The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)
Children in Reception follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum in which learning and development is organised into prime and specific areas as set out below:
Prime Areas
Personal, Social and Emotional Development including Making relationships, Self-confidence and self-awareness and Managing feelings and behaviour
Physical Development including Moving and handling and Health and self-care
Communication and Language including Listening and attention, Understanding and Speaking
Specific Areas
Literacy including Reading and Writing
Mathematics including Numbers and Space, shape and measure
Understanding the World including People and communities, The world and Technology
Expressive Arts and Design including Exploring and using media and materials and Being imaginative
At St Joseph’s we teach children by ensuring that we provide challenging, playful opportunities across these areas of learning and development. We provide opportunities to encourage children to foster the characteristics of effective early learning.
