Early Years Foundation Stage

The Early Years Foundation Stage is where children begin their journey as part of our school family. Guided by our values of Welcoming All, Nurturing Belief and Inspiring Futures, we create a caring and inclusive environment where every child feels valued, respected and supported to achieve their full potential. We have high aspirations for all children and are committed to providing the strong foundations they need to become successful learners.
We understand that starting school is an exciting and important milestone for both children and their families. Building positive relationships from the very beginning is at the heart of our approach. Our transition programme is carefully designed to help children feel confident and secure as they prepare for school. Through activities such as Stay and Play sessions, a Teddy Bears' Picnic and parent information meetings, families have opportunities to get to know our setting, meet staff and become part of our welcoming school community before September.
In Reception, children learn through a rich combination of purposeful play, exploration and carefully planned teaching. Learning experiences are designed to spark curiosity, encourage creativity and develop independence. We nurture belief by celebrating effort, perseverance and achievement, helping children to build confidence in themselves and develop positive attitudes towards learning.
Throughout the year, children make progress across all areas of learning while developing strong foundations in early reading, writing and mathematics. They learn to recognise and apply their phonics knowledge, develop an effective pencil grip and accurate letter formation, strengthen their communication skills and gain a secure understanding of numbers and number relationships.
Most importantly, we want every child to leave Reception as a happy, confident and enthusiastic learner with a love of learning and a strong sense of belonging. By welcoming all, nurturing belief and inspiring futures, we equip our children with the knowledge, skills and resilience they need for the next stage of their education and encourage them to embrace the opportunities ahead with confidence and curiosity.
