Here at St Joseph’s, we aim to make the school and the surrounding area a safe place to be by raising the awareness of the importance of road safety and sustainable travel.

Our Objectives:

  • To raise awareness of road safety among the children in our school and the local community.
  • To build a strong working party to support and complete initiatives.
  • To develop junior road safety officers across all years of the school.
  • To encourage a more sustainable and active approach towards travel.

We hope to achieve our amin with a range of activities, in and outside of the classroom, to build on pupils understand of road safety and active travelling.

Bling your bike

On Wednesday 4th December, all children at St Joseph’s took part in the bling your bike competition. We had the amazing Louise from Sustrans come in to talk to us all about the importance of being bright and seen during the winter months. Children were invited to make their bikes, bags or scooters bright and seen through the use of a range of recycled materials. We had some fantastic entries! 14 children were chosen as winners (2 from year group). Some were awarded for the most effort and others for the most eco-friendly. Have a look at some of our amazing creations!

Scooter club

Last half term, some children in KS1 participated in an after-school scooter club. Each session was filled in fun and engaging activities that centred around how we can be safe on the road with our scooters.

Together we explored the following:

  • How we check our scooters to ensure they are safe.
  • Speed limit of when riding on the pavement and ensure we keep a safe distance from pedestrians.
  • How we can break safely (jumping off or pressing the break pedal at the back)
  • How we cross the road safely with our scooters.

The children extremely enjoyed these activities and we hope that through these children feel more confident to travel into school actively.

Year 5 cycle skills

On the week of the 13th January, a groups of year 5 children participated in cycling skills sessions. During the sessions, they learnt to ride their bikes with greater control and confidence, practiced skills like braking, turning, and maintaining balance.

Spotlight on: Dr Bike

On Thursday 13th February, children were invited to bring in their bikes to get a free safety check completed. The Lovely people from Sustrans came in to collect, fix and send home new and improved bikes. We are looking forward to see more children cycle to school now that their bike is secure to do so.
